What is truSculpt® 3D?
Prior to recent technology advancements, liposuction was the only way to reduce stubborn fat in certain parts of the body but has risks of anesthesia and poor healing after the procedure. There are now nonsurgical ways to get rid of unwanted fat and tighten loose skin. The truSculpt® 3D treatment is a highly advanced nonsurgical fat reduction treatment that utilizes radio frequency energy to permanently sculpt and contour the body with no visible downtime. In clinical trials, patients who had this treatment experienced an average of 24% reduction in fat thickness in a single treatment. truSculpt® 3D works by delivering heat to eliminate fat cells. The truSculpt® 3D system uses a low frequency and high conductivity radiofrequency (RF) technology for deep penetration to treat the entire fat layer from skin to muscle while maintaining a comfortable surface temperature for patients. Am I a candidate for truSculpt® 3D?
Your truSculpt® 3D practitioner will determine whether you are a candidate for truSculpt® 3D during your consultation. Typically, an ideal patient will have a BMI less than 30. However, in some cases treatment of patients with higher BMIs may be appropriate. This treatment is not performed on those with implanted electronic devices (such as a cardiac defibrillators).
How long does the treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the size of the area treated. Each treatment zone requires 15 minutes. An average abdomen with 4 zones treated will take about 1 hour.
How many treatments will be needed?
Patients typically see results after one treatment, and most do not require additional sessions. However, some may choose to have a second treatment 3 months after their first to achieve optimal results or to treat additional areas.
What does the treatment feel like?
Your trained provider will lightly glide a handpiece over the area being treated for 15 minutes per zone. The temperature will slowly heat up and should remain tolerable for the duration of the treatment. Many patients compare the treatment to a hot stone massage while others may feel the heat to a greater extent. Patient are generally able to tolerate temperatures in the therapeutic range, with only rare exception.
Is there any downtime or side effects?
This is a noninvasive procedure and you will be able to resume your normal activities right after the treatment. Your skin may look pink for an hour or so. You may feel some tenderness in the treatment area right after the treatment, but that will go away within a day or two. Small nodules may be temporarily felt in a small percentage of patients which are expected to resolve. If nodules occur, massage the area twice daily for about 10 minutes and drinking plenty of water may help accelerate resolution.
When will I see results?

Right after the treatment, your body will start to break down and flush out the remnants of the fat cells that have been treated, which begins the reduction in the treated area’s circumference. Why chose truSculpt® 3D over CoolSculpting® ?
Both truSculpt® 3D and CoolSculpting® are examples of non-surgical fat loss procedures. Both are effective in removing unwanted fat but use opposite mechanisms in order to achieve similar results. CoolSculpting® uses extreme cold to freeze and kill fat cells, while truSculpt® 3D uses monopolar radiofrequency energy to heat fat cells to permanently destroy them. Both methods on average permanently destroy 20-25% of fat with each treatment; however, truSculpt® 3D has achieved the highest percentage of fat thickness removal after a single treatment (36%). The truSculpt® 3D heat has the advantage of skin tightening and producing textural improvements in the skin that are not seen with CoolSculpting® . CoolSculpting® does not address skin laxity which may increase after fat reduction and thus an additional skin tightening procedure may be necessary after CoolSculpting® . CoolSculpting® requires a pinchable amount of skin that is sucked up into the handpiece whereas truSculpt® 3D is able to treat non-pinchable flat areas that cannot be easily sucked up into a handpiece. The ability of the truSculpt hand piece to glide across target areas allows for smooth transitions between treated and untreated areas and avoids the “dents” and “shelving” which may occur with CoolSculpting® . truSculpt® 3D is FDA-approved device to be used on any most parts of the body. For the majority of patients, truSculpt® 3D treatments are more tolerable than the CoolSculpting® procedure. After the truSculpt® 3D treatment, redness and tenderness may be present at the treatment site, which usually resolves within a few hours after treatment. CoolSculpting® side effects may be more significant, including pain, itchiness, numbness, stinging, muscle spasms and swelling for a month or more. CoolSculpting® may rarely cause paradoxical hyperplasia (fat cells enlarge instead of dying). In summary, truSculpt® 3D is the newer technology, is able to treat target areas not amenable to being sucked up into a handpiece, has the desirable side effect of tightening and rejuvenating the skin and has a better safety profile avoiding adverse side effects such as skin pain and numbness associated with CoolSculpting® .
Should I chose truSculpt® 3D or Kybella® for reduction of double-chin fat?
truSculpt® 3D and Kybella® treatments are both non-surgical alternatives effective for fat removal under the chin. The Kybella® treatment utilizes deoxycholic acid, which when injected into subcutaneous fat, permanently destroys fat cells. The truSculpt®3D treatment utilizes monopolar radiofrequency to heat and permanently destroy fat cells. The truSculpt®3D treatment is generally well tolerated and results in a skin redness which may last an hour or two afterwards but otherwise requires no social downtime. The Kybella® treatment involves multiple needle injections which often results in bruising (72% in clinical trials), swelling, pain, numbness and induration which may last for several weeks. Thus, for patients concerned about social downtime, truSculpt® 3D is the preferred choice. Kybella® injections may cause injury to the marginal mandibular nerve (4% in clinical trials) which is manifested as a temporary asymmetric smile (range 1-298 days, median 44 days in clinical trials). The cost the Kybella® treatment is dependent on the amount of product needed and varies widely, often being much more expensive for patients with a larger surface area of fat to be treated. Single treatments tend to range from $1,200 to $2,400. Alternatively, the cost of truSculpt 3D is per session (often $750 or less), does not depend on the surface area of the fat being treated but does depend on the number of sessions required. Costs are likely to be much higher for Kybella® treatments compared with truSculpt® 3D in patients with larger amounts of fat. For Kybella®, most patients are going to need two to three treatments. With TruSculpt® 3D, if the problem is extremely mild, only one treatment may be needed; however, more often a second treatment is needed and if there is an extensive double chin, three or four sessions may be needed. For some patients, mixing and matching both techniques may be advantageous. For example, initial treatment with truSculpt® 3D to decrease fat without social downtime and decreased cost, and final touch-ups with Kybella injections into to smaller targeted areas of residual fat.
