Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Dermal Filler?
Injectable Dermal Fillers are used to add volume and enhance the natural beauty of the face, reduce the appearance of wrinkles to promote a more youthful appearance. Injectable fillers are great for an immediate natural result with minimal downtime. At Fab Med Spa, we use FDA approved injectable skin fillers which contain hyaluronic acid, a substance which is naturally found in our skin, but it diminishes as we age. Dermal filler injections can instantly lift wrinkles, folds, indented scars, and can augment the skin and lips.
How are Dermal Fillers used to improve my appearance?
Dermal fillers can be used to soften lines around your mouth and lift smile lines that extend down from the nostrils to the outer corners of the mouth. These deepen after about age 30 and when augmented, will make you appear less tired or sad. She also uses dermal fillers to lessen the folds extending down from the outer corners of the mouth. These “marionette lines” start to appear around age 40 and when corrected can reduce or eliminate the appearance of a frown. Dermal fillers can lessen the depth of vertical lines all around the mouth, which come after years of pursing the lips. Dermal fillers are popular lip plumping agents, restoring you to a full lip or enlarging your lips for a pouty or more voluptuous look. Dermal fillers may also be used to augment your cheek bones.
Will my Dermal Filler injection treatment be painful?
Most patients come 30 minutes early before their appointment time to sit with a topical anesthetic cream applied to the skin. Additionally, the majority of Dermal Filler products used are premade to contain an anesthetic, which makes treatment much more comfortable. Dermal filler injections may be painful, especially around the mouth, and if performed without anesthesia. However, with topical anesthesia most patients find the treatments tolerable and “worth it”. In some cases of lip fillers, a nerve block may be performed prior to the procedure.
Who is a candidate for Dermal Fillers?
Dermal filler treatments are suitable for both men and women seeking to enhance their appearance or look younger. The use of dermal fillers in patients with auto immune diseases (i.e., lupus, Chrohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, etc.) is controversial, and may lead to “flare” or worsening of these conditions.
What are the most common side effects of Dermal Filler treatments?
Injection site bruising is may occur. Risk of bruising can be diminished by avoiding aspirin and other products that thin the blood. You may feel bumps under the skin after your treatment which can often be massaged and become less noticeable over time.
How should I prepare for my Dermal Filler treatment?
Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin (note – this is sometimes included in certain cold remedies), baby aspirin (unless prescribed by your physicians), ibuprofen products (Motrin, Naprosyn, Aleve), vitamin E, multivitamins with vitamin E, alcohol (wine, beer, hard liquor), ginkgo, ginger, St. John’s Wort, and other products that are known to “thin” the blood and enhance bruising.
